Licenses Overview

Every HMI Device needs a license to exchange data with iRis Cloud. Your license provider sells license codes through the license server (the License Auth System), which also sends the purchase emails. You receive the codes into iRis Cloud, register them to HMI Devices, and manage them there. A license belongs to one HMI Device at a time, and a HMI Device without a valid license is refused when it tries to connect.

A license moves through three states:

StateMeaning
PendingThe license is registered to your account but not yet assigned to a HMI Device. It is offered under Available licenses when you add a HMI Device or register a license from the HMI Device details.
ActiveThe license is assigned to a HMI Device, and the HMI Device can exchange data. The start date is the day it was assigned; the expiration date comes from the license server.
ExpiredThe expiration date has passed. The HMI Device is disconnected and cannot connect again until a new license is registered. A license that was replaced by a new one is also shown as Expired.

An access token that has never been used with a license can use the free trial once. When you validate such a token in the Add new device dialog, the message “A 1-month free trial will be applied” appears with the trial period, and the License code (optional) field can be left empty. When the token has already used the trial, the dialog shows “This access token has already used the free trial” — “Enter a license code to add the device.” — and the License code field is required.

While the trial is in use, the HMI Device details show the banner “You are currently using the 1-month free trial” with the expiration date and the days left, and the License field reads Free trial in use. On the License management page, the trial is listed as Free trial without a code. Register a paid license before the trial ends to keep the HMI Device running — see Register a License to a HMI Device.

  • Notifications. Tenant Administrators receive a notice in the Notification Center Inbox 30 days, 7 days, and 1 day before a license expires (at 01:00 UTC) and again when it is marked expired (at 00:00 UTC). The notice reads, for example, “License XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX expires in 7 days. Please renew or extend it.” and has a Go to device button; the free trial is named Trial. No notification rule is needed. The notices are not sent by email. Instead, the license server emails the address given at purchase 30 days and 7 days before expiration, and on the expiration day.
  • When a license expires. From the expiration time the HMI Device is refused when it connects. Once a day at 00:00 UTC, expired licenses are marked Expired and the HMI Device’s open connection is closed. The HMI Device details show “Your license has expired.” — “Please register a new license.” — with a Register license button; for the free trial, “Your 1-month free trial has expired” — “Register a paid license to keep using the device.”
  • Extension by the seller. The seller can extend an Active license on the license server, for example when a contract is renewed. The license keeps its code; only the expiration date moves. The new date appears in iRis Cloud, the status history records “The license period has been extended by N day(s).”, Tenant Administrators receive “License period extended” in the Inbox, and the license server emails an extension notice to the purchase address. An expired license cannot be extended — register a new license instead.
  • Replacement. You can register a new license on a HMI Device during the last 30 days before its paid license expires, and at any time after it has expired — the Register license button appears only then. Earlier, the license server refuses with “The license cannot be renewed yet because more than 30 days remain until expiration.” The free trial can be replaced by a paid license at any time.
  • Days left. The days left (D-n) shown in the HMI Device details are counted in calendar days, so they match the dates in the license emails. Dates in iRis Cloud are shown in your browser’s local time; the server itself works in UTC.
  • HMI Devices cannot be deleted in iRis Cloud. A HMI Device keeps its license and its license history; to keep using it after the license ends, register a new license on the same HMI Device.
  • A license code can be used by one HMI Device only. A code that is already assigned is rejected with “License code is already in use.”
  • An access token belongs to one HMI Device. A token that is already registered is rejected with “Access token is already in use.”
  • A HMI Device uses one license at a time. Registering a new license replaces the current one; the previous license stays in the HMI Device’s license history as Expired.
